Sterling VFW Camphor Glass Pendant Necklace ART DECO /Edwardian 1920s Auxiliary. Easily mistaken for the fine jewelry it imitates, this stunning camphor glass and enamel filigree pendant necklace from the late teens/early twenties, on the Art Deco side of the transitional period from Edwardian to Art Deco, is well made and attractive. It features an octagonal glass centerpiece with lines of alternating width etched on the underside, which give it both a sunburst pattern of radiating lines and a soft radiance. The camphor glass is set in a fancy surround that gives it a finished look and frames it like a painting. This is surmounted by a plaque with the Veterans of Foreign Wars emblem, a Maltese cross centered with the patriotic American Eagle insignia a variation on the official seal of the U. , surrounded by a ring of dark blue enamel that reads in small letters, V. Between the arms of the cross, which are in orange and white enamel, are crossed swords, crossed rifles, crossed cannons and crossed anchors. The shape of the plaque is most harmonious with the fancy filigree at the corners of the camphor glass. The chain measures about 18″, extended, the pendant drops down about 1-7/8″ with the frame measuring about 1-1/2″ by 1-1/16″. The chain terminates in a well-working spring ring clasp, signed “925” followed by an “S” in parentheses (the pendant appears to be unmarked). The necklace is in Very Good vintage condition with just expected signs of light wear: surface dirt, slight scratches and tarnish, consistent with its almost a century’s age. Though made of silver, glass and enamel, it comes from a time when great skill and care went into fashioning imitations of fine jewelry.
