The look during this period was about expressing modernity and style – think flappers and Gatsby parties. Strong, geometric lines took off as did over-the-top sparkle and pizzazz. This lavaliere necklace is composed of sparkly marcasite stones and luminous opaque onyx stones, something that would have been very much in style during the Art Deco era. Such eye-catching pieces were extremely popular during the Art Deco era, especially for jewelry worn to the exuberant parties that were popular during that time. The focal point of this lovely necklace is the large rectangular onyx stone dangling from the rest of the necklace. This onyx is a lovely opaque black that almost glows in contrast with the sterling silver prong setting holding it in place. This necklace also features three smaller square cut onyx stones, equally gorgeous and luminous. The word onyx comes from the Greek word which can be translated as nail of a finger or claw. In Greco-Roman myth, the goddess of beauty, Aphrodite, lay sleeping when Eros cut her fingernails and left the clippings scattered on the ground. Because no part of a heavenly body can die, the gods turned them into stone which later became known as onyx. The onyx in this necklace is paired with sparkly marcasite stones, a classic Art Deco pairing. These stones are set into the swirl motif fancy links making up the center of this necklace, which serve to catch the eye and draw it in towards the onyx pendant. The necklace itself is composed of. The chain is a paper clip link chain, which adds to the swirl motif that the links closer to the center of the necklace make up. The links toward the center of the necklace have lovely, geometric shapes and swirls surrounding sparkly marcasite stones. The marcasite stones are safely inlaid into these links and draw out the sparkly made by the milgrain edging of the links themselves. These links are attached to one another by smaller connecting bands, also featuring swirl motifs. This necklace has a wearable length of 16.25 which means it wears fairly tight on the neck, as a choker necklace. The lavaliere portion of the necklace measures 2.43 long, landing the bottom of the largest onyx stone between the collarbone and the bust. Held securely with a spring ring clasp, this lovely necklace is sure to impress. Don’t miss your opportunity to own this incredible piece of history. Damage: Age appropriate wear. This listing is for the item only. The Art Deco era is famous for being the “Gatsby” or “Roaring Twenties” era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specifically cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Lavalieres are necklaces that include a fairly long chain or small link necklace, that ends in a single large pendant or tassel, which in turn often has additional pendants or tassels dangling from it. Though named for a mistress of Louis XIV, the style is usually associated with turn-of-the-20th-century jewelry and remained popular into the 1930s. Onyx is a chalcedony quartz that is mined in Brazil, India, California, and Uruguay. It usually has a fine texture and black color; however, some onyx also displays colored bands or ribbons against a black or brown background. Red onyx is quite rare and desirable and is also known as sardonyx. Onyx that has a deep green shade is known as Brazilian green onyx, and is very rare; it became a popular stone for sculpture and jewelry in the 1920s and 1930s. Marcasite was a very popular stone during the Art Deco period. Marcasite is meticulously hand-cut from pieces of iron pyrite and perfectly faceted to reflect the light. Marcasite is pale yellow or white with a bright luster, but tarnishes to a brown color. During the wild, Gatsby-style parties, ladies jewelry could be seen sparkling from across the room.
