The necklace features a station style configuration of rounded oval yellow-gold hued bakelite beads which alternate with a braid and gorgeous Chinese knots. With a wearable length of forty-five inches, this lovely opera length piece would be perfect doubled and worn at a shorter length, either stacked or with one of the lengths slightly longer to accentuate the gorgeous design of the piece. The brass bezel on this piece has some natural patina which is normal given its age, and adds a beautiful antique quality to it. Your local jeweler can easily polish this for you if desired. This mesmerizing necklace is exceptional in beauty, design, and quality, and would make the perfect gift for a loved one. Damage : Age appropriate wear. There is some very slight green tarnish where the silk meets the bale of the bezel. This does not affect the beauty or wear of the piece. The string has come slightly undone at the bale of the pendant, which does not affect the sturdiness of the piece when worn, and is normal for the age of the necklace. The price has been adjusted to reflect this. This listing is for the item only. This beautiful piece comes from the Art Deco era! The Art Deco era is famous for being the “Gatsby” or “Roaring Twenties” era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Chinese export jewelry became popular during the late Victorian period and persisted until the 1960s. During this period, Chinese craftsmen were considered by far the best in the world. The rich and wealthy would custom-order a piece through their local jeweler, who would send the design off to China to be made and sent back to Europe. This lengthy process was very expensive, making Chinese export pieces highly desirable, then and now. Originally tied to record information and convey messages before people began to write, Chinese knots have been used as a means of communication for thousands of years. Often used for worship, each one is named after its shape or the symbolic meaning that it carries. Their colors also carry meaning; for example, red signifies wealth. Chinese knots are often used in decoration, as gifts, and as adornments on clothes. Lavalieres are necklaces that include a chain or small link necklace which terminates in a single large pendant or tassel, and often includes additional pendants or tassels dangling from it. Though named for a mistress of Louis XIV, the style is usually associated with turn-of-the-20th century jewelry and remained popular into the 1930s. Bakelite is the first plastic made from synthetic components, and was developed by chemist Leo Baekeland in 1907. It was used to make a diverse range of products in a variety of jewel quality colors, and the retro appeal has made Bakelite jewelry quite valuable as a collectible item.
