Vtg Art Deco Czech Cherry Red Mughal Tutti Frutti Molded Glass Pendant Necklace
This 1930’s necklace was influenced by the East meets West jewelry that Cartier began in their 1911 jewelry designs and were later named Tutti Frutti. Czech made, this piece emulates carved rubies with molded and faceted glass. The thick and double sided tear-drop shaped pendant dangles with pendulum movement and is substantial with rich color and beautiful details. Glass beads along the chain sparkle brightly with lots of faceting and the necklace fishes with a hidden bead clasp – completing the look at the back of the neck. This piece is fresh looking and was well taken care of, the minimal amounts of wear are noticeable only on close inspection. The brass has a bright patina without any discoloration and very little darkening. The glass has a glossy surface and a modest amount of surface scratching, the molded design is still distinct. There are a few tiny chips here and there, the most distinct chip is along the side edge of the pendant at the top (seen best in bottom right photo). There are no irregularities to the setting or signs of solder or repair and the piece has a firm shape. The pendant drops 2 1/2 and is 1 1/8. Czech or bohemian glass created from the end of the Victorian era through the mid-century was world-renowned for its unprecedented resemblance to natural gemstones. Skilled craftsman from the region engineered new methods of cutting and coloring glass to simulate the look of rubies, diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, and more. In addition, Czech glass jewelry makers were highly trained in the metalwork for the settings around the glass. The Czech region produced so many different styles (all of superb quality) that Czech glass pieces have become their own collectable category. Art Deco is one of the first truly international styles, that influenced the design of buildings, furniture, fashion and of course, jewelry. The movement was given a name from the international exposition of Arts De coratifs et Industriels Modernes, that was held in Paris in 1925 and largely dedicated to the jewelry arts. Born out of ideas of modernism and the Industrial Age, this manifested into designs that used Cubism s bold abstraction and rectilinear shapes and combined them with intricate patterning, bold color and symmetry. High-end jewelry design houses like Cartier and Boucheron set the trends in gold and gemstones, which were then emulated by costume jewelry companies in glass or perhaps plastics, and brought to the masses. _gsrx_vers_837 GS 7.0.15 (837).
