Vintage 1930s Art Deco Chrysoprase Glass Enamel Flower Pendant Necklace
Fresh looking, soft wear is noticeable only on close inspection. Setting has a bright patina with minor surface wear, no darkening or discoloration. Glass has fresh sheen with no chips and light surface wear. Enameling is dense and bright without thinning and one or two teeny tiny chips noticeable only on very close inspection (one is on central pendant). Clasp is secure and original (jump ring is a replacement as it has a golden patina). 15 3/8″ with pendant dropping another 3″ below. Alloy (does not have silver/gold content). The delicate setting on this Art Deco necklace was given special attention with floral enameling in a contrasting color palette. Generious in silhouette with thin filigree links and glass cabs (made to simulate chrysoprase), this piece lays flush with a quality feel along your neckline. There are several different styles of enameling: guilloche (colored, transparent enamel over a metal surface with geometric grooves), champlevé (enamel fills etchings or depressions in a metal surface), plique a jour (translucent enamel fitted into open-back metal cells) and more. What makes antique or vintage enamel pieces collectible is the condition of the enamel work-is it distinct and vibrant? Is it free from chips? Other characteristics like an elaborate pattern, unique depiction, or the use of multiple colors can add more value to an enamel pieces. Art Deco is one of the first truly international styles, that influenced the design of buildings, furniture, fashion and of course, jewelry. The movement was given a name from the international exposition of Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes, that was held in Paris in 1925 and largely dedicated to the jewelry arts. Born out of ideas of modernism and the Industrial Age, this manifested into designs that used Cubism’s bold abstraction and rectilinear shapes and combined them with intricate patterning, bold color and symmetry. High-end jewelry design houses like Cartier and Boucheron set the trends in gold and gemstones, which were then emulated by costume jewelry companies in glass or perhaps plastics, and brought to the masses. _gsrx_vers_1326 GS 8.4.1 (1326).
