Egyptian Revival Art Deco Silver Enamel Necklace with Charms
T he 1922 discovery by Howard Carter of Tutankhamun’s nearly intact tomb received worldwide press coverage and sparked a craze for ornamentation inspired by Ancient Egypt. This endured well into the 1930’s and from time to time ever since has been revived. This very unusual, art deco, silver enamel necklace is marked for 800 quality silver. I suspect that it was made in Germany as were many Egyptian revival pieces. It measures 39.5cms 15½. Long and is 3.2cms wide at the centre. It weighs 11.1 grams. The necklace is mounted on a snake chain which closes with a ring clasp. Colourful motifs and symbolic charms are mounted on a different, more open chain. Each has a shiny, blue enamel roundel above. At the centre is the Ankh, Egyptian symbol of life enamelled in turquoise, red and blue. On either side are green stamps showing an Egyptian queen. Then on each side pharoahs heads enamelled in pale blue and finally lotus flowers in in blue, red and turquoise. The back has a light gold wash and the ankh and the stamps are marked 800. This fabulous Art Deco necklace is in fine condition. However there is a tiny loss of enamel on the blue of one of the roundels. This is hardly noticeable.
