Main Stone Carat Weight/Color: The malachite stones vary in size; On average they measure 5.8 mm long by 7.7 mm wide, Opaque deep green with bands of lighter shades of green running throughout. Accent Stone Carat Weight/Color. Stone Treatment: The stone(s) appear to be untreated, but we are not certified gemologists. Stone(s) have been tested and guaranteed using a professional Presidium Duo refractive, heat, and hardness tester. Stone Cuts: Oval Cabochon Cut Malachite. Item Measurements: The necklace has a wearable length of 19.25 and measures 5.8 mm wide. Closure/Clasp Type: Push-In Clasp. Link Type: Malachite Beads on Silk String. This gorgeous Art Deco era necklace was handmade by an artisan in China. The necklace is composed of hand carved and polished malachite beads on green silk string. The silk string was double knotted in between each bead so as to not lose beads in the case of a break. The clasp is composed of filigree and a floral motif. Damage: Age appropriate wear. The silk string is ever so slightly worn in places, which is to be expected of an item this age. The gold wash is wearing off of the clasp in some areas, which adds to the character of the item. The price of this item has been reduced to reflect this. This listing is for the item only. The Art Deco era is famous for being the “Gatsby” or “Roaring Twenties” era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Chinese export jewelry became popular during the late Victorian period and persisted until the 1960s. During this period, Chinese craftsmen were considered by far the best in the world. The rich and wealthy would custom-order a piece through their local jeweler, who would send the design off to China to be made and sent back to Europe. This lengthy process was very expensive, making Chinese export pieces highly desirable, then and now. Malachite is a popular stone which has light and dark green opaque banded areas. Malachite is a result of weathering copper ores. Many beautiful specimens of malachite contain special combinations with other minerals, such as azurite, cuprite, or chrysocolla. Malachite was used in antiquity until about 1800 for green paints. Filigree metalworking is a delicate form of art and has been found as early as 3,000 BC in Mesopotamia. It was perfected by the Phoenicians and Etruscan civilizations between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC. It involves stamping out a design in metal and hand bending and twirling threads, combined with tiny beads, until a final motif emerges. It is reminiscent of lace and considered one of the most difficult metalworking processes. Filigree is still a very popular technique in India and Asia.
