Markings: “Hoffman Sterling” on the back of the pendant, Tested, and Guaranteed. Country of Origin: Unknown. Gram Weight: 4.5 Grams. Material: Crystal Glass, Paint. Main Stone: Butterfly Wing. Main Stone Measurements/Color: 24.5 mm long, 17.6 mm wide, Opaque iridescent blue and purple hues. Accent Stone Measurements/Color. Stone Treatment: The stone(s) appear to be untreated, but we are not certified gemologists. Stone(s) have been tested and guaranteed using a professional Presidium Duo refractive, heat, and hardness tester. Carved and Polished Cabochon. Item Measurements: The pendant measures 1.75″ long including the bale and 0.95″ wide. Closure/Clasp Type: Standard Bale. Pendant Type: Drop Pendant. Handmade during the Art Deco era by the Hoffman jewelry company. The focal point of the pendant is the butterfly wing which is blue and purple in hue and displays beautiful iridescence when light reflects off it. To protect the painted butterfly wing, it’s covered by a crystal glass dome. The stone is surrounded by a Jugendstil-style border. Damage: Age appropriate wear. This listing is for the item only. The Art Deco era is famous for being the “Gatsby” or “Roaring Twenties” era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specifically cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. The Jugendstil movement took place during the late 19th century in South Germany. This movement was revolutionary in its introduction of new styles and motifs into the world of jewelry the Jugendstil movement in particular utilized themes of nature and the natural. Famous artists from the Jugendstil movement include Theodor Farhner, Josef Hoffmann, Heinrich Levinger, Robert and Louis Koch, and Wiener Werkstatte. The Grand Tour was a popular vacation during the Georgian and Victorian eras. This vacation was generally between two and four years long, and it allowed wealthy people the opportunity to study different cultures, architecture, and art. Butterfly wing jewelry rose to popularity during the early part of the Art Deco era in England, after it was first introduced at the 1924 British Empire Exhibition. These rich blue, jewel-like pieces evoked surprise and delight when jewelers revealed that these pieces were made with real butterfly wings. Sourcing these butterflies was very expensive, but the beautiful blue iridescence they exhibited was considered worth the cost.
