A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specially cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would usually take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. The Georgian era is known for its hand-crafted designs, which were heavily influenced by world exploration. A few signatures of this era were high karat gold, cameos, chatelaine accessories, foil-backed stones, rivière necklaces, memento mori and mourning jewelry, and rose and mine cut diamonds. While the jewelry from this era began to see designs from all over the world, jewelry from abroad was still very expensive to acquire due to sea travel. Between age and difficulty of acquirement, pieces from the Georgian era are amazing and rare historical finds. Diamond is derived from the Greek word, adamas, which means unbreakable. Diamonds are extremely rare, with the earliest diamonds being discovered in India around the 4th century BC and being traded along the Silk Road; the trade route between India and China. During the latter half of the 18th century, diamonds were discovered in South Africa. Diamonds are renowned for their strength and brilliance of color and ability to reflect and disperse light. This is what gives them such a brilliant sparkle. Colors range in blue, yellow, brown, green, purple, pink, orange, and red; the less color a diamond has, the higher its grade is. Diamonds range from 1 billion to 3.5 billion years old, and because of their age and qualities, have become the symbol for love across many cultures. Rose cut diamonds have a long history dating back to the early years of the 16th century, and have enjoyed periods of popularity throughout their existence, most recently in the 21st century where they are valued for their antique appearance. Rose cut diamonds are so named due to their facets which were hand-cut to resemble the petals of an unfolding rose, while the bottom is flat. These facets can number from three to twenty-four, and made the diamonds highly desirable as they sparkled and shimmered in the light. Unique among more modern cuts, antique rose cut diamonds were hand-cleaved, jewelers often using another diamond to cut the stone. Rose cut diamonds are highly prized and sought after by modern collectors as most of these stones were lost or re-cut into more modern cuts.
