Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specially cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would usually take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Baltic amber is found only in northern Europe and accounts for much of the known amber in the world. Amber is an organic fossilized resin that is formed when sap exudes from pine trees and hardens over many years. It typically contains an internal matrix of materials, including water or gas bubbles, organic plant matter, or even insects. Baltic amber specifically comes from sap that is 35 to 50 million years old and came from trees that are now covered by the Baltic Sea. It has been used since ancient times to create jewelry and decorative ornaments, and has long been used in folk medicine for its healing properties.
