Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specially cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would usually take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Amethysts are a semi-precious variety of quartz that are valued for their varying shades of translucent purple hues. The purple color is derived from iron and other trace element deposits. Throughout antiquity, amethysts were used in religious and royal jewelry, and were considered as valuable as rubies, emeralds, and even sapphires. Siberian Amethysts are known for their vivid deep collector grade purple hue with blue and red shades throughout. This type of dark purple amethyst is found in the Ural Mountains, with deposits outside the city of Yekaterinburg, Russia. Amethyst has been mined in this area since the 18th century or possibly earlier. Today the term Siberian no longer refers to origin of the actual stone, but rather the intense purple hue which is sought after for jewelry making. Siberian amethyst is now the common or popular name for the vibrant dark purple of the stone, although most of the valuable amethyst are found in South America.
