Antique Edwardian Open Back Diamond Paste Vintage Bezel Riviere Bridal Necklace

Welcome to Jewel Box :. A beautiful example of this classic design that has been around for centuries and will probably be around for centuries to come since it has never been bettered. This adorable old necklace is decorated with sparkling old cut glass pastes which emulate early cut diamonds or rock crystal which was so prized at the time. They are cut very high at the top with the peak sliced off flat and very pointed to the bottom. Generally pastes have wider table tops so these are quite difficult to photograph. I have not been able to do the stones justice but have shown them with and without flash. The images showing the reverse look a bit opaque in real life they are clear. The lovely old settings are individually made and because the crystals are set (with claws for safety) open backed the light can flood through and make the most of those facets and purity of the glass. The joining links are all soldered for safety unlike later examples. This would have cost a pretty penny in its day. The necklace fastens with a secure ring bolt clasp which has been replaced at some point (not by me). Because of the size of the pastes and the brass settings it does look like you might be wearing a gold necklace set with real rose cut diamonds. The colour is better in real life as my new camera adds a wash of grey to everything eg the cloth is a rich clotted cream and not grey! As you are unlikely to ever find this at a longer length it is a worthwhile exercise. The pastes are app 6 mm how they cut these so precisely i cannot fathom. All the pastes have their little points all sparkling, present and correct. A beautiful gift for a collector of rare Antique Costume Jewellery.
