Antique Art Deco Czech Egyptian Revival Blue Moulded Glass Vintage Necklace

Welcome to Jewel Box :. A wonderful heavy necklace with graduated glass beads from the Old Kingdom of Bohemia. Some would describe them as’poured’ glass but they misuse the term as poured glass is literally that.. When it is poured into a setting such as (earlier) costume jewellery by Chanel. Also, sometimes referred to as’carved’ glass that too is something different eg some very special pieces by Galle and Daum (not the acid etched pieces) where the glass is carved away by hand. This is moulded glass ie it is poured into moulds to obtain the shapes of the beads. These are graduated in size so there must have been many moulds! The colour is a rich lapis blue and indeed the beads must have been made with carved Lapis Lazuli in mind as so many semi precious gems were the starting point for Czech art glass beads. Retained in the crevices of the design on the beads is the staining (paint) that was used to highlight the design. This was a technique much empoyed by Rene Lalique in his fabulous opalescent vases. The blue beads are interspersed with little milk glass spacersm generally two, but in one place there are three and at the rear of the necklace they are single on one side and double on the other. The beads graduate from the centre front which is app 17 mm down to 7 mm. There is no clasp as the necklace simply goes over the head. The necklace is a lovely weight and is app 26 inches long. The necklace is on its original double string and hangs beautifully. Blue is a difficult colour to get right as the light tends to love it so much but i have shown the necklace in many lights and camera settings so hope this gives you a good indication i would say the image with the ruler is the most accurate. A very special necklace to add to a collection of glass or jewellery. Any boxes, mannequins or fabrics are for display only. Everything is photographed in natural light with a flash.
