The Art Deco Era is famous for being the “Gatsby” or “Roaring Twenties” Era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. During the Art Deco Period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. The interest in Egyptian motifs began in the late 1700s, when Napoleons military campaign in Northern Africa helped popularize fine jewelry featuring exotic aesthetics. The British in particular fell in love with Egyptian styling after Admiral Nelsons victory at the Battle of the Nile in 1798, and soon, wealthy women all across Europe were wearing Egyptian-inspired pieces. The demand for Egyptian designs boomed again in the 1920s, after the discovery of King Tutankhamen’s tomb in 1922. Not only was Egyptian Revival jewelry associated with ancient opulence, it held the allure of exotic and mysterious symbols. Egyptian Revival designs were often pulled directly from Egyptian amulets; common motifs included the Eye of Horus for healing and protection, scarabs and lotus flowers for creation and life, and the Ankh symbolizing eternal life. The chasing technique is a very difficult silversmith process when the artist uses a nail-like tool and hammer to hand etch patterns within the metal work. This process was very difficult and only the best jewelers were trained in the process. Abalone Shell is a type of Mollusk shell that has a beautiful opalescent hue. It has been harvested to use in jewelry since the times of the Greeks and Romans. Please take this into consideration before.
